Yes, Variation 5 is a spoof of the opening passage of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Why? Why, because I could - and because it is, after all, a strict variation on Monteverdi's Ritornello, just like every other section in this piece.

Variations 17 and 24 are also jokes (Second Viennese School jokes, to be precise) - and yet, of course, also exact variations on the original material. All right, I admit it - I'm incorrigible.
